Most people go about their daily routine and regular driving activity without much thought. Whether commuting to or from work, taking the kids to school and extramural activities, going to the gym, or quickly popping out to run some errands, it has become second nature to just jump in the car and drive off.
But we need to pay more attention, because hijackings and robberies can happen when you least expect them. Criminals pounce on unsuspecting individuals wherever the opportunity presents itself, even in broad daylight and at locations that are perceived as safe and secure; for instance, outside business premises, housing estates and shopping complexes. These places often have security personnel at the entrances, access control, and an abundance of video cameras.
Still, we need to stay alert. A criminal act can happen anywhere, at any time. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking it could never happen to you. Rather, keep these safety tips in mind:
• Don’t be an easy target. While driving, stay aware of your surroundings. Be alert and on the lookout for suspicious persons or vehicles. Try to vary your routes and routines.
• Check your rear-view. If you suspect someone is following you, drive to a police station or a busy, well-lit area.
• Keep valuables out of sight. In some cases, hijackings happen not for the vehicle itself but for the valuables inside. Avoid leaving items like bags, laptops or phones visible in the car.
• Prepare for entry. Have your access card or driver’s license ready so you can pass through boom gates quickly. Don’t talk on your phone while entering premises, attackers rely on you being distracted.
• Don’t ignore red flags. If something seems suspicious as you approach an access-controlled area, rather drive away and return later. Always have a back-up plan.
• Check you tech. Regularly test your car’s tracking device to make sure it’s working properly.
• Your safety matters most. If you are hijacked, remember your life is worth more than your belongings. Stay calm, co-operate and get to safety as soon as you can.
