The Tracker Vehicle Crime Index reveals that crime patterns are never static – hotspots, days, and times shift throughout the year. However, many of the tactics used by criminals to target motorists remain the same.
• Objects thrown from bridges or roadsides: Stones, bricks, or concrete blocks are thrown at windscreens to force drivers to stop.
• Debris on the road: Bricks, spikes, or other obstacles are placed deliberately to cause damage or delay.
• Faked injuries: Individuals lie in the road pretending to be hurt, hoping you’ll stop.
• ‘Blue light gangs’: Hijackers impersonate law enforcement using unmarked vehicles, flashing blue lights, and fake uniforms.
• Vehicle fault deception: Criminals indicate that something is wrong with your car, then hijack you when you stop to check.
• Drugging victims or ‘ladies of the night’: A drink is spiked with a substance such as GHB or the ‘date rape’ drug at a meeting place or by a ‘lady of the night’ that a client has taken home. When the client regains consciousness, his valuables, including his vehicle, have been taken.
• Online selling scams: Fake payments or test-drive hijackings during private sales.
• Be aware: Don’t be an easy target. Stay focused on your surroundings. Hotspots change all the time.
• Don’t stop: Be wary of stopping on the side of the road, especially if you experience any of the above tactics, you’re alone, in a quiet area or it’s nighttime. If possible, keep driving to a safe, busy location.
• Watch your tail: If you suspect you’re being followed, adjust your rear-view mirror or glance back to make it clear you’ve noticed them. If they persist, head for a police station or busy, well-lit area.
• Verify law enforcement: SAPS officers must be able to show their official identification. Plain-clothes officers carry an appointment certificate (ID card). If an unmarked vehicle attempts to stop you and you’re unsure, drive to the nearest police station or a safe public place.
• If you are hijacked: Stay calm and co-operate. Avoid direct eye contact and sudden movements. Prioritise getting away safely and report the incident to authorities as soon as possible.
