Whether you're a mom, daughter, sister, or friend, your safety on the road matters. Driving can be empowering, freeing, even meditative. But it also comes with risks. So, here are some practical driving tips to help you feel confident, prepared, and protected wherever the road takes you.

Look after your car

Your car is your first line of defence. Regular servicing, tyre checks, working lights, and topped-up fluids aren’t just about car performance, this all plays a part in keeping you safe. Don’t ignore strange sounds or warning lights. Also, make sure to keep fuel topped up as this helps you avoid risky stops at night or in unfamiliar areas.

Keep your phone charged and accessible

A fully charged phone means you can call for help if you need it. Use a hands-free connection or keep the phone stored safely in the cubbyhole or centre console while driving to avoid distractions.

Know where you’re going and share your journey

Set and check your destination in the GPS before you leave. If you’re heading out late or driving somewhere unfamiliar, let a trusted friend or family member know your route and when you expect to arrive. Consider sharing your live location with that person.

Take care while driving

Keep the car’s doors locked and the windows closed. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. While driving, be mindful of your surroundings. If something doesn’t feel right, particularly when slowing down or coming to a stop, trust your instincts and keep driving if it is safe to do so. If you feel like you’re being followed head to a police station or a brightly lit, busy parking area.

Be alert while parked

Park in a well-lit area, ideally with access control or security guards on duty. Be aware of your surroundings while getting in or out and as you walk to and from your car. Make sure the doors are properly locked before walking away and have your keys ready as you approach your car. Also, don’t linger in your car before getting out or driving away, for example, to scroll through your phone.

Keep safety items in your car

For emergencies, keep items such as a torch, blanket, water and a first aid kit in your car. To ensure your safety consider including a power bank, window breaker and seat belt cutter, whistle, and pepper spray or a taser.
