Hijacking

If you are involved in a hijacking

  • If you are involved in a hijacking, don’t put up a fight - be as submissive as possible. Give them what they want and, if possible do not look into their eyes. Concentrate on surviving – resisting your hijackers could cause them to become violent. Remember, possessions can be replaced, a life cannot.
  • Listen to the hijackers and do exactly what they tell you to do – never initiate any movement yourself. Do not scream or make sudden movements.
  • Keep your hands where the hijackers can see them, ideally at chest level.
  • Do not reach for your bag or any other valuables.
  • If they order you out of the car, open the door slowly with one hand, keeping the other one up where they can see it.
  • Slowly move away from the car.
  • Be honest with your hijackers – if they ask you if you have a wallet, cell phone or firearm on you, tell them the truth. If they find out that you have lied to them, they may become violent.
  • If you have children in the back seat, tell your hijackers. It has been Tracker’s experience that the vast majority of hijackers will allow you to take your children with you.
  • If ordered to lie down, do this and stay there until you’re sure the hijackers have left.
  • If the hijackers insist that you drive the vehicle, drive carefully and do not do anything out of the ordinary.
  • After the hijacking, contact the police (10111) and Tracker (0800 13 23 23) as soon as possible. The sooner you let us know, the quicker we can track down your vehicle and hopefully make an arrest. (Click here for information on our Vehicle Recovery Process)
  • A hijacking is an extremely traumatic experience and we strongly recommend that you get professional trauma counselling to help you deal with the incident.
  • Do not attempt to press your assist button during a hijack situation.
