Tracker Company Profile

New Tracker Office

Introduction

Tracker has been South Africa’s leading vehicle tracking company since the 1990s. And while vehicle tracking and Stolen Vehicle Recovery (SVR) remains the company’s core business, the Tracker of today has evolved into a highly sophisticated technological company offering leading edge fleet monitoring and telematics solutions to both individuals and organisations throughout Southern Africa.

But it’s more than this.

Tracker strives to create value for a broad range of people and industries. It’s about filtering and processing different strings of vehicle data and providing meaningful information that can be utilised and connected with other layers of intelligence to improve the lives of motorists, the general South African public as well as a wide spectrum of organisations in the insurance, vehicle manufacturer, fleet, dealer and other intermediary markets.

It’s about taking vehicle, route and driver information and creating true value propositions for a host of different audiences. Whether it’s powering a live traffic product or enabling tailored insurance offerings, Tracker wants to add value wherever it can, to whomever it touches.

By combining world-class products and services and feeding intelligent and accurate information back to both customers and various industries, Tracker believes that it can truly improve the lives of South Africans in ways that extend beyond only recovering stolen and hijacked vehicles.

Key to Tracker’s success has been the many symbiotic relationships it has established with the likes of the SAPS (with whom Tracker has a formal partnership), the insurance industry, vehicle manufacturers and dealerships as well as fitment centres and finance institutions.

But, regardless of how the vehicle tracking industry evolves in the future, one golden thread shall remain forever woven into the very fabric of the company:

By arresting thousands of criminals, saving hundreds of lives, and preventing scores of future crimes from ever happening, Tracker is and always will be a powerful force for good in South Africa dedicated to bringing down crime and Taking Back Tomorrow for all its people.

Tracker’s credentials

  • Invented the industry – Tracker’s technology brought mainstream vehicle tracking to the world in the United States in 1986.
  • Largest vehicle tracking company – Globally, there are some 2-million Trackers fitted to vehicles throughout 30 countries. In South Africa, Tracker’s technology is fitted to more than 570 000 vehicles.
  • Partnership with the SAPS - Tracker is the only vehicle tracking company in South Africa to benefit from a formal partnership with the South African Police Service, having just recently won its third consecutive five-year contract with the police. The Tracker-SAPS partnership is widely considered the most successful private-public sector collaboration ever seen in South Africa.
  • Largest recovery fleet – The partnership with the SAPS means that Tracker has some 1300 vehicles and almost 50 aircraft in its recovery arsenal – by some margin the largest recovery fleet on the continent.
  • Most recoveries in the world – Tracker’s technology has recovered almost 300 000 stolen and hijacked vehicles throughout the world. In South Africa alone, Tracker has recovered some 48 252 vehicles in only 13 years. More than any other tracking company in Africa.
  • Most arrests – Tracker’s recoveries in South Africa alone have resulted in some 8663 arrests - significantly more than any other vehicle tracking company on the continent. Tracker’s technology is currently responsible for an average of 100 arrests a month in South Africa.
  • Global power – Tracker frequently exchanges intelligence with partners in crime-ravaged countries such as Columbia, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico to ensure that our technology remains one step ahead of the world’s most sophisticated vehicle crime syndicates. Similar relationships exist with international crime fighting organisations, including the likes of Interpol.
  • National recovery network – In addition to its GSM and GPS networks, Tracker owns its own radio-satellite recovery network which covers almost 98% of SA’s population.
  • National installation capabilities – In addition to a network of Tracker-approved fitment centres throughout the country, Tracker offers clients mobile installations at a time and place convenient to the customer.
  • Established track record with insurers – Tracker has earned the respect of all major insurance companies, many of whom offer discounted premiums and excess waivers to customers whose vehicles are protected by Tracker.
  • Leading edge technology – Tracker’s technology is some of the most sophisticated in the world. Tracker SkyTrax is, in fact, the technology behind the insurance industry’s breakthrough “Pay as you Drive” offering.
  • Extended recovery capabilities - Tracker has recovery capabilities in Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho – the latter of which boasted a recovery rate of 100% for almost a decade.
  • Generic for the industry - Such has been Tracker’s success that its brand name has become a generic term given to vehicle tracking devices in South Africa – evidence of the company’s runaway success over the past 13 years.

Culture

Underpinning everything that Tracker does, is the belief that the company is making a real difference in South Africa. Whether it is helping to track and recover assets, combating crime or delivering services that enable people and organisations to be more efficient in how they operate, the creation of value is critical to everything that Tracker strives to achieve.

Driven by its powerful internal values of Responsibility, Connectedness, Integrity and Agility, Tracker staff refer to each other as ‘Heroes’ – not in an arrogant sense, but rather to remind each other that the work that every person does is critical to the business. On many occassions, in fact, it saves lives. Tracker Heroes understand that if they don’t perform their duties to the best of their ability, their deficencies and shortcomings may well impact other departments and thus hamper Tracker’s ability to function effectively.

As such, there is a powerful culture of accountability within the business. Here is a visual depiction of the ‘Tracker Echo’, epitomising the essence of who Tracker is.
